I’ve had the pleasure of photographing the King family since 2019, when @drkiarraking was the first person to book my on my website immediately when I launched it, for a Mommy and Me portrait of her and little toddler Kai 🥲 seeing this family over the years has been immensely beautiful! So happy to get the whole crew together for these portraits (2024)

I had the pleasure of capturing Pregnancy Portraits for beautiful @meganschnellhair 😍🥰 OH…. And here’s a very soft announcement: I am completely retooling my business (shoot offerings, experience and process, pricing, etc) in 2025. It will be somewhat drastic but very wonderful. I get my lens up close to children and mention off handedly, “if you look here into the glass, you can see the camera’s eye open and close when it blinks.” It results in inquisitive gazes straight into the lens, revealing the curiosity of children I adore so much. And that’s exactly when I release the shutter — aka the “eye” “blinks�” — capturing their expression of, “oh wow, something really is inside that thing…. There are so many mysterious things to learn about.”

Sol & Anastasia, aka “Síto” and “Tota” 🥹💞 my son and my niece’s (3yo & 2.5yo) summer ‘25 portraits! Documenting the children of my family in the studio together - making traditions, memories and heirlooms - is ACTUALLY a dream come true and a gift I will always be proud of :)

PS. Styled by me. These outfits are 3T and 4T and available in the stu wardrobe for shoots. Not gonna lie, I think adding matching berets, little scarves, and little doc martens would be so QT for these toddler looks…

📍 CHICAGO • We boarded at their usual station underground. These city kids’ regular routes keep them underground in the subway tunnels… so it was a delight to watch them realize the train goes UP as well, for the first time! We emerged over the streets and with the dramatic slanty-way the train goes when traversing deep curves. “It looks like the buildings are tipping over!” said Helen. If you know, you know.

The sunlight pouring through the train windows illuminated the family, dancing on Helen’s curls while little Saul slowly grew less suspicious of the noisiness a subway brings. For the underground moments, I used an on-camera flash or the natural ambient light. Great fun and perhaps will be a core memory for them, captured 📸

my fave shots are the black and white of the kids going through the turnstiles (slide 3-4)

💡Sometimes I don’t mind blowing out the highlights, like in the first pic (see her forehead, neck, forearm, belly, bra, and chair… I over-exposed her “rim light”). When the bright spots are so blinding that the camera can only read “white,” it kind of looks like what a memory feels like? Something about the camera’s light sensitivity reflecting emotional sensitivity? Light is love? Hard to explain but maybe you get it too. Gonna play more intentionally with this idea in the future :)

I paired her classic maternity look — Calvin’s and denim — with a hard flash or two so these photos would pop! It adds boldness and glamour to an outfit that can typically be shot very softly.

It’s never too late or too early to bring your child in for a fine-portrait session. I truly believe every stage is worthy of a keepsake, and I’m grateful to do it. XOXO

This week my son turned 3 and I brought him in for impromptu birthday portraits. It’s delightful to watch him mosey around my studio, suspicious about how all the equipment works. I explain “Mommy’s work.” I’m proud and beaming at his curiosity and together we captured this moment with a camera’s clicks. Sol, I love you.

People always tell me, “you must have so many great photos of your kid.” While I do - the iPhone is handy like that - I don’t actually bring him in for the full experience more than once or twice a year. I feel pressure to really DO IT UP, and the assignment becomes overwhelming. Not to mention, this is “work” as I am a portrait photographer. So, I put it off and put it off. This is fine, once or twice a year is perfectly fine… but I’ve realized I need to release the pressure and just create with my little lad!

So, this was very unplanned. For years we’ve had this vintage sheer button-up I thrifted that I’ve been waiting for him to grow into, but the fit is still odd. So I kept it unbuttoned for an easy feel. He insists on wearing this hat everyday (at all times if he steps outside our house), so of course it’s a presence in these portraits. I wasn’t sure I’d appear in the pics… I didn’t have an outfit planned and it’s difficult to capture myself and him at the same time. So, I pointed the camera to the mirror and set us up right there. Grabbed the studio’s giant-fits-everybody-fabulously blazer (oh yay, the colors match) and decided wth I need pictures of US… I’ll join.

My point is - there’s no need to overthink your shoots. The magic is the magic. ✨

Fun fact - the last time I photographed Susie (Classic Portraits just for her, just because) was coincidentally the day after she met her now husband, Sal, in 2020! So it was a big pleasure to photograph her, Sal, and Rudi 🐾 to celebrate their coming baby 🥲💕

This happens often: my clients’ photoshoots somehow accidentally fall right around (I’m talking days! Hours!) KEY unplanned bookmarks of my client’s lives. Examples: met the love of their life, their company just landed the biggest contract to date, got pregnant after years of trying, found out their dream house offer was accepted, got a promotion they never saw coming, the list goes on. They come to the studio absolutely buzzing with excitement, or a newfound quiet confidence. I notice.

It’s feeling ready to celebrate yourself, attracting what you want, or something? I don’t mean this in a woo-woo/stars align way. I just think that when you decide for yourself that you are ready to be seen… and take a real step towards that… the ripple effects are tenfold. the magic happens. Book that session. 🔥

Ps. I’m seeing if this reel performs decently… I’ve been so hesitant to follow the algorithm’s plea to put photos into a quickly-paced video. It feels deluded, tbh! I prefer the static slideshows (optimum photo viewing) but I can see that it doesn’t have the same reach that my stories do. So here’s a little experiment 🫣 yolo

We can all agree @intheklauds is THEE most glamorous, right? It was a joy to capture her and her family and keep the big secret for a bit. I absolutely lived for this look she put together… the dress had perfect goddess vibes, clinging and draping in all the right places. Accessories made it modern and chic and so her… they’re from her wedding day, in fact. Also, more up-do’s, please ❤️‍🔥

For the solo shots here, I kept the posing moody and shadowy (natural light) to bring out the coolness Klaudia naturally exudes. We let the kids do their thang (run around mom and dad LOL) to add a dose of parenthood realness. More family shots from this session coming soon.

Klaudia is also known as @glamatelierchicago, so it all makes sense 😉💄
